The problem
During my Game Development Master’s program, I had to participate alongside colleagues from 6 different universities from allover Romania in a 5-day game jam, the first edition of Game Jam Universitar. The theme was “Evolution”, and we had to create a game from scratch in that time frame. This was the first time I had the occasion to work in a complete team, with developers, 2D and 3D artists.
The solution
We came up with a tower defense game where the player controls a monkey that has to defend a mistique obelisk from waves of apes. The player engages in melee combat to eliminate the neverending threat, collects DNA from vanquished foes and uses it to unlock evolutionary upgrades.
The development was quite challenging, as we had to learn to work together and coordinate our efforts, as well as balance our work life with the jam’s time constraints. We used Unity3D for the game engine, Blender and Substance for 3D modeling and painting, Photoshop for 2D assets, and Audacity for sound editing.
